Group Reading Builds Social & Emotional Skills

Reading alone is great, but when your child reads with others they get much more than a good story. Discussing their favorite character's (or bad guy's!) actions and feelings helps children develop empathy, understand different perspectives, and really get into the story. Next time you grab a book, get ready to start some important conversations with your youngster!

Laughter Improves Memory & Reading Comprehension

Laughter is good for the soul and apparently the brain too! Studies show that children who read and enjoy funny stories generally have better comprehension and memory. Be bold and choose a funny book, then make silly voices and movements when reading with your kid. The laughter alone will be worth it, and it will help your child's learning process.

Readers Are Leaders (RaL)

RaL is a transformative program where children become confident readers by re-enacting stories they love. Through interactive script work, tutoring, and acting coaching, our 3rd-8th graders develop foundational reading skills. Then, they perform in front of everyone!

Storytelling

The "Big Read" initiative, designed by the National Endowment for the Arts and sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, is a 2-day workshop that gives students the chance to tell us who they are.

With a master storyteller by their side, students embark on their storytelling journeys, overcome self-doubt and discover the power that comes with saying things aloud that have gone unspoken.
